Technical Writer/Document Specialist

Background

Zope Corporation (ZC) hosts integrated solutions for content management, classifieds, citizen journalism, blogging, video, and federated search. The Company wants to improve product usability through documentation. Documentation will sometimes precede software user-interface development, to help determine that what's proposed, is easy to explain and understand. To accomplish the above ZC wants an individual who will:

Responsibilities

1. Develop and maintain documentation (on-line and written) plus training materials for existing products.
2. Develop User Manuals in advance of software implementation to focus on ease of use and trainability.
3. Assist engineers with user-support communications.

Experience/Skills

1. Researching information and writing technical documentation for user manuals, systems or programs, training and/or methods and procedures manuals.
2. Training people to use software applications and demonstrate ability to express complex ideas to less technical users.
3. Demonstrate abilities to use new software applications.
4. Demonstrate problem solving skills e.g., think about how the user is using the software and how they might use it better if the software behaved differently.

We decided to use Zope and ZSQL Methods to provide web interfaces to databases that contain information about large scientific datasets - such as starting date, number of data points, and quality metrics for the data. Starting with a working 'MySQL' database, using the pre-configured Apache that ships with Zope, we got a simple query working in well under 2 hours. Very impressive product!
